Updated August 2026
Alright, let’s talk SEO, the most loved (and hated) marketing channel.
From content, to backlinks to SaaS and tools, the global SEO services market generates more revenue than people realise and far less than some reports claim.
You probably are here because you are an SEO, own an SEO agency or SaaS tool, dabble on selling backlinks, or any other related services, right?
Bear with me, while I explain you all these lovely stats, but let me start with something big, I mean HUGE: estimates for 2026 range from roughly $84 billion to $108 billion depending on what each researcher counts as “SEO revenue.”
This reference page traces every figure to the organisation that published it first, states what each number actually measures, and flags where estimates disagree and why.
Let’s dig!
Key Takeaways
- The SEO services market (agency and consultant services only, excluding standalone software) was valued at $83.98 billion in 2026 by Mordor Intelligence and at $108.28 billion by The Business Research Company; the gap reflects scope differences, not measurement error. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026) (The Business Research Company, July 2026)
- The SEO services market grew from $92.74 billion in 2025 to $108.28 billion in 2026, a 16.8% single-year jump, according to The Business Research Company. (The Business Research Company, July 2026)
- Forecasts project the market will reach $148.86 billion by 2031 at a 12.12% CAGR (Mordor Intelligence) or $203.83 billion by 2030 at a 17.1% CAGR (The Business Research Company), depending on scope definition. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026) (The Business Research Company, July 2026)
- North America holds 33.90% of global SEO revenue, the single largest regional share, while Asia-Pacific is the fastest-growing region at a 13.55% CAGR through 2031. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- The average SEO agency charges $3,209 per month on a retainer; freelancers average $1,348 per month, a gap of 138%. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
- 78.2% of SEO providers bill on a monthly retainer, making it by far the dominant pricing model. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
- 362,753 SEO and internet marketing consultants were operating in the United States as of 2025, up 19.1% from 2024; the sector grew at a 21.9% CAGR between 2020 and 2025. (IBISWorld, August 2025)
- Alphabet’s total revenue reached $350.0 billion in FY2024, with Google Search & other generating $54.0 billion in Q4 2024 alone, illustrating the paid-search scale that SEO competes against. (Alphabet / SEC EDGAR, February 2025)
- AI search referrals are growing fast but remain small: BrightEdge found OpenAI referral growth hit +44% month-over-month and Perplexity +71% month-over-month in November 2024, yet both remain well below 1% of total referral traffic. (Emergen Research, citing BrightEdge Technologies, June 2026)
- 54.3% of agencies raised prices in 2025-2026, with 37% citing the addition of GEO and AEO services as the primary reason; these are new service categories, now frequently billed at $900+ per month. (GoodFirms, July 2026)
- Outcome-based SEO contracts are accelerating at an 18.40% CAGR, faster than any other service model, as buyers demand proof of results. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- Voice and Visual Search SEO is growing at a 20.10% CAGR through 2031, the fastest-growing SEO service type. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
How big is the global SEO industry?
The headline figures quoted in press releases reflect different research scopes. A number quoting “SEO services” means agency and consultant billings. A number quoting “SEO software” or “SEO market” may add tooling. Let’s read each figure in context.
What is the SEO services market worth in 2026?
Four independent research firms published 2026 estimates within twelve months of each other. The range spans roughly $84 billion to $108 billion.
Mordor Intelligence, which explicitly excludes paid search advertising and standalone software licenses from its scope, places the SEO services market at $83.98 billion in 2026, growing from $74.9 billion in 2025. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
The Business Research Company projects the market grew from $92.74 billion in 2025 to $108.28 billion in 2026, a 16.8% year-on-year increase, based on its broader services definition. (The Business Research Company, July 2026)
Emergen Research valued the global SEO market at $94.50 billion in 2025 with a 10.7% CAGR forecast through 2035 to reach $262.40 billion. (Emergen Research, June 2026)
MarkNtel Advisors estimated the market at $81.46 billion in 2024 and $87.43 billion in 2025, projecting growth to $171.77 billion by 2030 at a 13.24% CAGR. (MarkNtel Advisors / PR Newswire, July 2025)
IBISWorld, which covers the US “SEO & Internet Marketing Consultants” industry, puts the US market alone at $119.4 billion in 2025, up 14.1% year-on-year, a figure notably larger than some global estimates because IBISWorld’s industry classification captures a broader set of digital marketing consultancy services. (IBISWorld, 2025)
What did the SEO market look like in 2025?
2025 is the last fully measured year, and the researchers still land twenty billion dollars apart. Where they converge is on who was actually paying: small businesses, on retainers, mostly for on-page work.
- Mordor Intelligence measured the global SEO services market at $74.9 billion in 2025 (services only, excluding software). (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- The Business Research Company measured the market at $92.74 billion in 2025. (The Business Research Company, July 2026)
- MarkNtel Advisors estimated 2025 billings at $87.43 billion. (MarkNtel Advisors, 2026)
- Emergen Research placed the 2025 market at $94.50 billion. (Emergen Research, June 2026)
- Small and medium enterprises accounted for 58.40% of global SEO services billings in 2025. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- E-commerce and retail commanded 26.25% of sector revenue in 2025, the largest vertical share. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- Retainer and subscription contracts represented 61.95% of SEO services revenue in 2025. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- On-Page SEO led all service types with 41.80% of 2025 revenue, approximately $31.29 billion in dollar terms. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- Asia-Pacific was the largest region in The Business Research Company’s 2025 data, while Africa was the fastest-growing region by rate. (The Business Research Company, July 2026)
What is the SEO market projected to reach by 2030?
Every forecast on record has the market at least half again bigger within five years. Treat the spread between them as the honest signal here: nobody can measure this industry precisely, and nobody measures it shrinking.
- The Business Research Company forecasts the SEO services market will reach $203.83 billion by 2030 at a 17.1% CAGR from 2026. (The Business Research Company, July 2026)
- Mordor Intelligence projects $148.86 billion by 2031 at a 12.12% CAGR over 2026-2031. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- MarkNtel Advisors projects $171.77 billion by 2030 at a 13.24% CAGR. (MarkNtel Advisors / PR Newswire, July 2025)
- Emergen Research projects $262.40 billion by 2035 at a 10.7% CAGR. (Emergen Research, June 2026)
- IBISWorld forecasts US SEO & Internet Marketing Consultants industry revenue to reach $210.4 billion by 2029 at a 15.5% CAGR. (IBISWorld, 2025)
Why do SEO market size estimates disagree by $25B?
The numbers are not wrong. They are measuring different things. Every headline figure is built on a scope decision, and scope decisions vary.
What counts as “SEO revenue”?
The core disagreement is definitional:
- Services-only scope (agencies, consultants, freelancers delivering optimisation work): Mordor Intelligence explicitly excludes “spend on paid search advertising and stand-alone SEO software licenses.” Its 2026 figure is $83.98 billion. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- Services plus tooling scope: Some firms include revenue from platforms like Semrush, Ahrefs, Moz, BrightEdge, and Conductor alongside agency fees. Adding software licences to services naturally produces a larger headline number.
- Broader digital marketing consultancy scope: IBISWorld’s “SEO & Internet Marketing Consultants” industry captures activity beyond pure-play SEO: paid search management, social media strategy, and analytics consulting are included in some NAICS-coded firms, which is why their US-only figure ($119.4B) exceeds many global services estimates. (IBISWorld, 2025)
Agency-only vs services-plus-tooling estimates
Semrush Holdings, the largest publicly traded dedicated SEO and digital marketing intelligence platform, reported full-year 2024 revenue of $376.8 million, a 22% increase year-on-year, with annual recurring revenue of $411.6 million at year-end, serving approximately 117,000 paying customers. (Emergen Research, citing Semrush filings, June 2026)
In Q2 2025, Semrush reported revenue of $108.9 million, up 20% year-over-year, with annual recurring revenue of $435.3 million and customers paying over $50,000 annually growing 83% year-over-year. (Emergen Research, citing Semrush filings, June 2026)
The contrast is instructive: Semrush alone, one software platform, generated $376.8 million in 2024. (Emergen Research, citing Semrush filings, June 2026) If tooling revenue were aggregated across dozens of platforms and folded into the “SEO market,” the total figure would rise significantly above the agency-services estimate.
How fast is the SEO industry growing?
Faster than the economies it sits in, whichever firm you believe. The disagreement is only about how much faster.
What is the SEO industry CAGR?
Published CAGRs from primary research firms cluster between 10% and 18% depending on scope and forecast period:
- 12.12% CAGR for 2026-2031 (Mordor Intelligence, services only) (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- 16.8% single-year growth from 2025 to 2026 (The Business Research Company) (The Business Research Company, July 2026)
- 17.1% CAGR for 2026-2030 (The Business Research Company) (The Business Research Company, July 2026)
- 13.24% CAGR for 2025-2030 (MarkNtel Advisors) (MarkNtel Advisors / PR Newswire, July 2025)
- 10.7% CAGR for 2026-2035 (Emergen Research) (Emergen Research, June 2026)
- 15.3% CAGR for the US market 2020-2025 (IBISWorld) (IBISWorld, 2025)
Which SEO service segments are growing fastest?
The growth is not evenly spread. The segments pulling ahead share one trait: they are the ones clients cannot do themselves.
- Voice and Visual Search SEO is the fastest-growing service type at a 20.10% CAGR through 2031. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- Healthcare and life sciences is the fastest-growing vertical at a 17.40% CAGR through 2031. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- Multinational and enterprise-scale SEO is the fastest-growing organisation-size segment at a 16.10% CAGR through 2031. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- Outcome-based contracts are the fastest-growing pricing model at an 18.40% CAGR, surpassing retainer growth rates. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
Which pricing models are growing fastest?
- Retainer/subscription contracts still lead at 61.95% of 2025 revenue but outcome-based contracts are outpacing them on growth. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- 78.2% of SEO providers use a monthly retainer as a billing model (multiple models can apply to one provider). (Ahrefs, August 2024)
- 48.9% bill per-project and 34.8% bill hourly. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
- Only 9% of agencies use purely performance-based pricing. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
- 70% of agencies surveyed either increased their pricing or planned to do so in 2025, with inflation and improved expertise cited as the main drivers. (SE Ranking, February 2026)
Where is the SEO money geographically?
Follow the ad spend and you find the SEO spend. The regions writing the biggest Google Ads cheques are the same ones paying the most to avoid writing them.
Which region generates the most SEO revenue?
- North America contributed 33.90% of global SEO services revenue in 2025, the single largest regional share. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- Emergen Research places North America even higher at over 38% of global SEO revenue in 2025. (Emergen Research, June 2026)
- The United States is the single largest national SEO market globally; approximately 70% of US businesses use SEO services, and US e-commerce revenue surpassed $1 trillion in 2024. (Emergen Research, June 2026)
- North America’s share in dollar terms is roughly $31.4 billion of the global market using Mordor Intelligence’s base figure. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- The US SEO and internet marketing consultants market reached $119.4 billion in 2025, growing at a 15.3% CAGR from 2020 to 2025. (IBISWorld, 2025)
- The United States generated $170.4 billion of Alphabet’s FY2024 total revenue of $350.0 billion, a proxy for search advertising scale in the world’s largest SEO market. (Alphabet / SEC EDGAR, February 2025)
Which region is growing fastest?
- Asia-Pacific is forecast to record a 13.55% CAGR between 2026 and 2031, the fastest of any region, driven by rapid smartphone adoption, digital ad spend growing 11.1% year-on-year in 2024, and search absorbing 47% of digital ad budgets in the region. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- The Business Research Company identified Africa as the fastest-growing region in 2025 by percentage growth rate, though it remains a small overall share of the global total. (The Business Research Company, July 2026)
- Europe features a compliance-intensive environment, with GDPR driving early investment in privacy-safe analytics and multi-language SEO. Germany, France, and the United Kingdom are the primary European markets. (Emergen Research, June 2026)
- Australia’s Digital Economy Strategy 2030, investing approximately $800 million to assist small and medium businesses in digital channels, reflects government-supported demand for SEO services. (Emergen Research, June 2026)
Which single country is growing fastest?
- India, China, Japan, and Australia are the primary Asia-Pacific SEO markets, with India’s rapidly expanding digital economy, home to over 800 million internet users, creating substantial SEO demand. (Emergen Research, June 2026)
- Markets from India to Indonesia rely heavily on mobile search for product discovery, motivating local merchants to invest in search visibility. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- Saudi Arabia and the UAE are primary growth markets in the Middle East, driven by Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 digitalisation agenda and high smartphone penetration across Gulf Cooperation Council states. (Emergen Research, June 2026)
How much do businesses actually pay for SEO?
Pricing surveys disagree because they sample different populations. The Ahrefs survey polled 439 providers globally; SE Ranking polled 260 agencies where 94% serve small or local businesses; GoodFirms surveyed 300+ agencies across 35 countries in April-May 2026.
What is the average monthly SEO retainer?
- The overall average monthly SEO cost is $2,917 per month across all provider types (agencies, freelancers, and consultants combined), per Ahrefs’ survey of 439 providers. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
- 63% of businesses spend between $500 and $5,000 per month on SEO. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
- 23% of SEO providers charge between $500 and $1,000 per month. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
- The most popular monthly retainer range in SE Ranking’s survey (260 agencies) was $500-$1,000 per month, with 64% of agencies charging under $1,000/month. (SE Ranking, February 2026)
- 30% of agencies charge less than $500 per month in SE Ranking’s sample. (SE Ranking, February 2026)
- In GoodFirms’ survey of 300+ agencies (April-May 2026), 48% operate in the $1,500-$5,000/month bracket and 43.3% charge under $1,500/month; only 5.5% charge over $5,000/month. (GoodFirms, July 2026)
- Local SEO averages $1,557 per month, with agencies charging $1,819 and freelancers around $1,150. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
The averages hide the shape of the market: most agencies bill under $1,000 a month, and the $2,917 headline is pulled up by a thin tier of enterprise retainers.
What is the average hourly SEO rate?
- The average hourly SEO rate is $111, with $100-$150 per hour being the single most popular band at 25% of providers. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
- 60% of agencies set hourly rates below $100 in SE Ranking’s survey. (SE Ranking, February 2026)
- GoodFirms found 25.2% of agencies charge under $50/hour (offshore and South Asia), 26% charge $50-$100/hour, and 12.6% charge $100-$200/hour (senior US/UK/AU specialists). (GoodFirms, July 2026)
- 1 in 10 SEO providers charges more than $150 per hour. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
What do one-off SEO projects cost?
- The most common per-project fee range for SEO agencies is $2,501-$5,000 according to Ahrefs’ survey. (Ahrefs, August 2024)

- 66% of agencies charge under $2,000 per project in SE Ranking’s sample. (SE Ranking, February 2026)
- Full technical SEO audits are commonly priced as $1,500-$5,000 project fees. (GoodFirms, July 2026)
What do small businesses pay vs enterprises?
- Small businesses typically pay $2,500-$5,000 per month for comprehensive SEO; mid-market companies invest $5,000-$10,000. (GoodFirms, July 2026)
- Enterprise SEO programs frequently exceed $5,000 per month and may reach $15,000 or more; legal, healthcare, finance, SaaS, and enterprise e-commerce brands are the most common buyers at this level. (GoodFirms, July 2026)
- GEO/AEO add-on services (optimising visibility in AI-generated answers) are now frequently billed separately at $900+ per month, rising to a $2,500/month average for enterprise clients. (GoodFirms, July 2026)
- SMEs contributed 58.40% of total global SEO billings in 2025; large enterprises are projected to grow at a faster 16.10% CAGR through 2031. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)

- 82-83% of agencies are now optimising for AI-generated answers in some form, and 56% have introduced AI search as a formal service line. (GoodFirms, July 2026)
Agency vs freelancer vs consultant: who charges what?
The label on the invoice changes the number on it. Same deliverables, often the same tools, sometimes the same person a year later with a different business card.
How much more do agencies charge than freelancers?
- On a monthly retainer, agencies charge 138% more than freelancers on average. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
- Agency average monthly retainer: $3,209/month. Freelancer average: $1,348.63/month. (Ahrefs, August 2024)

- The most common monthly retainer range for consultants is $2,501-$5,000/month. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
How does experience change the rate?
- SEOs with 2+ years of experience charge 33% more than those with under 2 years of experience. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
- SEOs in business for two years or less average $1,540.52/month on retainer; those with more than 2 years average $2,023.13/month. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
- On an hourly basis: $73.05/hour for providers with under 2 years of experience, rising to $97.11 at 2-4 years, $102.03 at 5-10 years, and $118.35 for 10+ years. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
How does provider location change the rate?
- 40% of US and Canadian agencies charge over $125 per hour, versus only 6% of European agencies at the same rate. (SE Ranking, February 2026)
- North American agencies typically charge $2,500-$10,000+/month on retainer; Western European agencies typically charge $2,000-$8,000+/month. (GoodFirms, July 2026)

- SEOs in India, Central America, and South America charge the least across all pricing models. (Ahrefs, August 2024)
How does SEO industry revenue compare to Google’s ad revenue?
How much does Google earn from search advertising?
Google’s search and advertising revenue dwarfs the SEO services market, which exists largely because organic rankings are the unpaid alternative to Google Ads.
- Alphabet’s total revenue for FY2024 was $350.018 billion, up 14% year-on-year from $307.394 billion in FY2023. (Alphabet / SEC EDGAR, February 2025)
- Google Search & other generated $54.034 billion in Q4 2024 alone, up from $48.020 billion in Q4 2023, a 12.5% increase in a single quarter. (Alphabet / SEC EDGAR, February 2025)
- Google Services total (including Search, YouTube, and subscriptions) reached $84.094 billion in Q4 2024, roughly equal to Mordor Intelligence’s estimate of the entire global SEO services market for full-year 2026. (Alphabet / SEC EDGAR, February 2025)
- Google advertising revenue (Search, YouTube, Network combined) totalled $72.461 billion in Q4 2024 alone. (Alphabet / SEC EDGAR, February 2025)
- In Q4 2025, Alphabet reported advertising revenue of $82.28 billion, up 13.5% year-over-year. (CNBC, February 2026)
- Alphabet’s Q4 2025 total revenue was $113.83 billion, up almost 18% year-over-year. (CNBC, February 2026)
How does the SEO industry compare to paid search spend?
The relationship is structural: every dollar spent on paid search advertising creates an incentive to rank organically and reduce reliance on paid clicks.
- The United States generated $170.447 billion of Alphabet’s FY2024 revenue. (Alphabet / SEC EDGAR, February 2025)
- EMEA generated $102.127 billion and APAC generated $56.815 billion of Alphabet’s FY2024 revenue, reflecting the global distribution of search advertising, and therefore organic search demand. (Alphabet / SEC EDGAR, February 2025)
The takeaway is blunt: one quarter of Google Services revenue equals a full year of the entire global SEO services market. SEO is a big industry optimising against a vastly bigger one.
Is SEO money moving to AI search?
How much traffic do AI engines actually refer?
- In November 2024, BrightEdge research found OpenAI’s search engine referral growth increased 44% month-over-month and Perplexity referral growth increased 71% month-over-month, demonstrating the rapid expansion of AI search platform referral traffic. (Emergen Research, citing BrightEdge Technologies, June 2026)
- Despite these growth rates, AI search referrals remain well below 1% of total referral traffic as of 2025. (Emergen Research, citing BrightEdge Technologies, June 2026)
- 82-83% of agencies are now optimising for AI-generated answers, yet only 4.7% track AI citation share as a primary KPI, indicating widespread capability claims without measurement infrastructure. (GoodFirms, July 2026)
Hold those two numbers next to each other. More than four in five agencies now sell AI-search optimisation, while AI engines still refer under one percent of traffic. The money is moving ahead of the users.
How much budget is being reallocated to GEO/AEO?
- 37% of agencies that raised prices in 2025-2026 cited GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) as the primary reason. (GoodFirms, July 2026)
- GEO/AEO add-on services are typically billed at $900+ per month at the SMB tier, rising to a $2,500/month average for enterprise clients. (GoodFirms, July 2026)
- 56% of agencies have introduced AI search as a formal service line. (GoodFirms, July 2026)
- Outcome-based contracts are growing at 18.40% CAGR, the fastest pricing model, driven partly by clients demanding accountability in an AI-disrupted environment. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
What is forecast for traditional search volume?
- Voice and Visual Search SEO is growing at a 20.10% CAGR through 2031, the fastest-growing SEO service type, as spoken queries and image-based search reshape how optimisation is delivered. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- Mobile devices accounted for 63.5% of organic traffic in 2024, validating Google’s mobile-first indexing and sustaining demand for mobile SEO. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026)
- The SEO services market growth forecast of 12-17% CAGR across all research firms suggests that AI search is currently expanding the addressable market for SEO services rather than contracting it. (Mordor Intelligence, January 2026) (The Business Research Company, July 2026)
How many SEO companies are there?
More every year, and not gradually.
How many SEO firms operate in the US?
- There were 362,753 SEO and internet marketing consultants operating in the United States as of 2025, an increase of 19.1% from 2024’s count of 304,592. (IBISWorld, August 2025)
- In 2024, there were 304,592 firms, up 18.0% from 258,139 in 2023. (IBISWorld, August 2025)
- The sector has grown at a 21.9% CAGR between 2020 and 2025, faster than almost any other professional services category. (IBISWorld, August 2025)
How fast is the number of providers growing?
- A 2024 agency pricing report by Promethean Research found that 64% of 45,000 digital agencies across the US and Canada employ up to 10 people, confirming the market is dominated by small operators. (SE Ranking, citing Promethean Research, February 2026)
- The number of US SEO and internet marketing consultants grew from 304,592 in 2024 to 362,753 in 2025, an addition of nearly 58,000 firms in a single year. (IBISWorld, August 2025)
- 53% of SE Ranking’s surveyed agencies have under five employees; 25% have five to ten specialists. (SE Ranking, February 2026)
Nearly 58,000 net-new firms in a single year says as much about barriers to entry as about demand. The market is growing fast; the number of people selling it is growing faster.
Methodology and Sources
How statistics were selected: Every figure in this article was traced to the organisation that published it first. Aggregator articles, statistics roundups, and “laundered” statistics (figures cited without a traceable primary source) were excluded. Where two figures describe the same phenomenon, both are included with labels distinguishing what each measures.
How estimates were verified: Each source URL was checked to confirm the page loads, the figure appears on the page, and the date is present. Statistics that could not be confirmed were dropped.
Why estimates disagree: SEO market size estimates differ because researchers make different decisions about scope (services-only vs services-plus-software), geography (US-only vs global), and methodology (survey-based vs top-down modelling). These are not errors. A figure quoted without a scope statement is incomplete.
